AI Ethics Survey in Nepal

This project conducted a landscape mapping of AI ethics understanding in Nepal, creating shared vocabulary among stakeholders and laying foundations for responsible AI frameworks and policies.

Background

While AI has immense potential to transform Nepal's economy, it also carries a significant risk of widening the existing digital divide. There is a crucial need for a national conversation and shared vocabulary among stakeholders (users, policymakers, activists, and developers) to understand each other's concerns and challenges, ensuring ethical and responsible AI growth. This project addresses the gap in understanding AI ethics within the local context of Nepal.

Research Aim

Our goal is to comprehensively survey and analyze AI ethics knowledge and perceptions among technology students, professionals, and policymakers in Nepal, identifying gaps and misunderstandings to inform resources, frameworks, and curricula for responsible AI development.

Outcomes

The project has surveyed multiple stakeholder groups, conducted focus group discussions and workshops, and produced detailed reports and online resources. These outputs establish a foundation for national AI ethics frameworks, curricular development, and ongoing collaboration on ethical AI initiatives in Nepal and other low- and middle-income countries.
