Diabetes-Associated Gut Microbiome Diversity

This project is advancing precision prevention and treatment of type-2 diabetes (T2D) in South Asian populations by investigating population-specific gut microbiome signatures in Nepalese patients.
T2D is rising globally and in Nepal due to lifestyle changes. Gut microbiome composition varies across populations and influences T2D progression, yet South Asian microbiomes remain understudied compared to Western populations.
Our goal is to identify population-specific microbial signatures linked to T2D progression by analyzing gut microbiome diversity in Nepalese patients and integrating findings with international cohorts. These insights aim to inform precision prevention and tailored treatment strategies for South Asian populations.
The project has characterized gut microbiome diversity in Nepalese T2D patients and identified microbial markers associated with disease progression, providing a foundation for region-specific interventions and helping reduce disparities in global diabetes research and treatment.
